Changing Places - making accessible toilets better

I was scrolling along Tiktok the other day when I came across this video

In the video, disability advocate Shane Hryhorec takes us through a tour of a very impressive public toilet and shower facility down at Largs Bay in Port Adelaide, South Australia.

The new facilities have:

  • 2 Male toilets
  • 2 Female toilets
  • 2 Disabled access toilets
  • 4 Gender Neutral toilets
  • A baby change room
  • A Changing Places room

Now normally a new toilet block doesn't warrant a mention, but this one does, mainly for the last item on that list.

What is Changing Places?

Changing Places is an organisation that was started in the UK back in 2005. Changing Places campaigns for the development and installation of fully accessible public facilities for all people with disabilities regardless of severity.

What does a Changing Places facility look like?

It looks kind of like this (image taken from here: https://changingplaces.org.au/why-changing-places)

A photo of a Changing Places facility. It contains a toilet, a privacy screen, a hoist for lifting people, a height adjustable platform for changing

At a glance there's a central toilet, privacy screen, fully equipped shower, and a changing table.

All of the above makes it a Gold Standard facility. What tips it into Diamond Standard is the addition of a ceiling hoist. This means that the facility can support people who might otherwise not be able to travel and enjoy the bay.

There are around 312 Changing Places facilities around the country. Not all of them are Diamond Standard, but they are a cut above your standard disability accessible toilet.
